Mian Xiang (闈㈢浉) is the classic Chinese art of face reading. Discover the traditions of Chinese physiognomy.
What Is Chinese Face Reading?
Chinese face reading, often called Mian Xiang, belongs to the historical family of xiang xue traditions. Its texts organize observations of facial regions, features, expression, and complexion into interpretive systems. Studying these systems can illuminate cultural history and the language of traditional courses. It does not provide a validated way to infer a stranger’s character or predict life events.
Core Study Areas
- The three facial regions: an approximate upper, middle, and lower division used to organize observation.
- Individual features: brows, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and the changing expressions of the face.
- Whole-face context: many traditional teachers warn against drawing a conclusion from one feature alone.
- Historical sources: school-specific vocabulary, examples, and sayings that require careful contextual reading.
The linked Lesson 2 article below gives a close English explanation of one teaching sequence: Yin and Yang first, then the three facial regions and their traditional associations. Those associations are presented as claims of a historical method, not facts about an individual.
